Free Startup Directories in 2026: Badge Requirements, Queues & Backlink Conditions
Compare free startup directory submissions in 2026. Learn when a badge is required, how review and publication queues differ, and when a dofollow backlink has conditions.

A startup directory can call a submission "free" while asking you to place its badge on your website. Another may need no badge but keep your listing in a queue for months. A third may publish your page while reserving a dofollow backlink for products that finish near the top of a launch board.
The useful question is not just "Can I submit for free?" It is "What does this particular free placement require, when could it appear, and what link would it earn?" Those details decide whether a directory is worth your time.
Stay Up's Startup Directories page brings the submission methods, Ahrefs Domain Ratings, known review and queue times, and backlink conditions into one catalog. This guide explains how to read it and choose a realistic submission plan. The examples below reflect our catalog on November 3, 2026; check each directory's current terms before you submit.
Longer lists already exist: Backlinks.fyi lists 223 free directories, and LaunchDirectories lists 130+ startup directories. Stay Up focuses on firsthand checks of each submission path: whether it requires a badge or payment, how long review and publication may take, and what conditions apply to the backlink. A directory count alone cannot tell you which path fits your launch.
"Free" can mean two different paths
In our catalog, Badge means a listing path that requires you to embed the directory's badge. Free means a listing path without that badge requirement. Some directories offer both, and many also offer a separate paid placement. A badge path does not cost a listing fee, but it does ask for space and a link on your site.
| Path shown in the catalog | What you give | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Badge | A badge linking from your site to the directory | Placement instructions, review time, queue, and any backlink condition |
| Free | A submission without a badge requirement | Review time, queue, and whether the desired backlink depends on a result |
| Paid | The listed fee for a separate placement | Price, timing, and the terms for that paid path |
Do not assume a paid option makes the badge or free option unavailable. For example, StartupBase has badge, free, and paid paths in our catalog. Compare the terms of the path you would actually use.
At StartupBase, the badge path has a 4–5-week queue and the badge-free path has a 10-week queue in our catalog. Its paid Launch Now option starts at $39 and lets you skip the queue and choose a launch date. Paying can be worthwhile when timing matters, but compare the exact paid benefits with the no-fee paths before spending: a price alone does not establish the review time, placement, or backlink terms at another directory.
A badge is also a link from your site to the directory. The backlink you may want is a separate link from the directory to your site. Putting a badge on your homepage does not, by itself, guarantee the reverse link's attributes or timing.
Read review time and queue time separately
A directory can review a submission before placing an approved listing into a publication queue. Review time and queue time therefore answer different questions. When both are listed, account for both before you plan a launch around the placement. If a path has no review or queue time shown, that waiting stage is absent in Stay Up's verified directory data and counts as zero in the waiting-time filter. Any listed stage still applies; check the directory's current terms before planning your launch.
Our directory catalog shows how wide the range can be:
| Directory and path | Timing recorded in our catalog | Backlink detail recorded |
|---|---|---|
| BetterLaunch — badge | 1–2 days of review, then a 5-week queue | No additional condition listed for this path |
| StartupBase — badge | 4–5-week queue | No additional condition listed for this path |
| StartupBase — free | 10-week queue | No additional condition listed for this path |
| PeerPush — free | 4-month queue | No additional condition listed for this path |
| LaunchIgniter — badge | 4-month queue | Dofollow link requires a Top 3 finish |
These are cataloged terms, not promises of an approval date. A queue can change, and a submission can still be declined. If your launch needs a listing this month, a long free queue may be useful for later discovery but should not be the centerpiece of this month's campaign.
Check the backlink condition for the path you chose
A live listing, a clickable link, and a dofollow link are not interchangeable. A directory may link to your site but attach rel="nofollow", rel="sponsored", or rel="ugc"; it may also apply a dofollow link only after a launch result or another requirement. Inspect the actual published link rather than assuming a submission produced the backlink you expected.
Our catalog records conditions by placement, because the same directory can treat its free, badge, and paid paths differently. A few examples make that concrete:
- LaunchIgniter's badge path: the catalog says a dofollow link requires a Top 3 finish. Placing the badge alone does not meet that condition.
- LaunchOnIt's free path: a dofollow link requires a Top 3 finish. That condition belongs to the free path, so do not automatically apply it to the badge path.
- TinyLaunch's free path: a dofollow link requires both a Top 3 finish and a badge. The catalog still labels this as a free submission path; the badge is a condition for that backlink, not the initial listing path.
For paths where our catalog shows no extra dofollow condition, read that as the currently recorded placement terms. Recheck the directory's submission page and the eventual live listing. Directory policies and link attributes can change after a catalog update.
A directory link is worth evaluating for its audience and referral traffic too. A relevant listing can help someone find your product even if it does not move a third-party metric such as Domain Rating. Our guide to setting a Domain Rating target explains why a score change should not be the only goal.
Build a shortlist that matches your launch
Start on the Startup Directories page and use the Submission method filter: choose Free if you will not place a badge, Badge if you are willing to add one, or Paid if you are comparing fees. Set Maximum waiting time for your launch window; when viewing paid paths, use Maximum price to stay within budget. You can also filter by Minimum directory DR. Then read each row's review, queue, minimum DR, remarks, and backlink condition. The directory DR filter refers to the directory's rating; a row's "min DR" remark is a requirement for your site.
If you would rather answer a few questions, use the Directory Recommender. It asks about your backlink goal, paid versus unpaid listing, badge preference, acceptable wait, and your site's DR, then recommends matching catalog entries. A recommendation is a shortlist, not an approval or backlink guarantee. Read the terms on each result before submitting.
For each directory you choose, keep a small record: submission date, chosen path, badge URL if applicable, stated review and queue times, approval status, published URL, and the live link's rel value. That turns a pile of submissions into a trackable distribution effort. It also makes it easy to spot a listing that has gone live without the link you expected.
FAQ
Are all free startup directories badge-free?
No. In our catalog, Free is the path without a badge requirement; Badge is a separate no-fee path that requires one. Some directories offer both.
Does a badge guarantee a dofollow backlink?
No. LaunchIgniter's badge path, for example, requires a Top 3 finish for a dofollow link. Check the terms of the exact placement you select.
Does no queue listed mean instant publication?
There is no queue stage in our verified data for that path. A listed review time still applies. If neither review nor queue is shown, the waiting-time filter treats the path as having no wait. Check the directory's current terms before submitting.
Can a directory be useful without a dofollow link?
Yes, if its audience is relevant and the listing brings qualified visitors or credible discovery. Judge the placement by those outcomes as well as its link attributes.
Where should I start?
